A Sustainable App

Project Overview
This is a new development team and product when I was joining. So my task was to design a Sustainable application for the Z generation and make a sustainable sharing platform in the internal social network.
My Contributions
1. I handled and led to execute user research and UI design before develop the sustainable app.
2. Planning the goal of the research, Proposal to the director, Inviting the interviewers, Execute the research, analysis, and synthesis of the research.
3. I have in charge of 2 user interviews, 1 surveys, 1 usability test.
4. Design about 224 pages of mockups, prototype, UI Guidelines, Design System.

Goal

The goal was to focus on the UX phase, illustrate my own design thinking, and create an application that would be great social media for the Sustainability group.

Challenge

Sustainability is a new topic for me, So I have to get a lot of exposure to it. Also, this was my first time leading a User Research project, I studied and researched to carry it out.

The 1st User Interview

The first user interview to define the product's Target Audience. We invited 16 colleagues and friends to conduct user interviews to understand everyone's concept and understanding "sustainability".

Based on the interview result, we have divided the interview's sustainable lifestyle into this form, separated with the level of sustainablity.

The 2nd of user interview

After the 1st user interview, we have some knowledge about the sustainable. We hope to discover the motivations and expectations, what their needs and services that we can be provided. Through this interview, explore the needs of sustainable groups, problems and solutions.

Empathy Map

After two interviews, we learned the thoughts of the sustainable group, and tried to fill in the empathy map with the results of the interview to understand the situation or mood of the target group. Help us have a more specific concept when analyzing the target or designing a marketing strategy, and at the same time narrow the cognitive gap between team members and the target person. Based on the information, feelings and thoughts received by each ethnic group, the following contents are listed and sorted out:

Target Audience group 1: focusing and concerned about sustainable, and keep execute in their lifestyle.

Target Audience group 2: does not exclude sustainable lifestyle, but they don't know to start.

Target Audience group 3: They know the knowledge of sustainability but didn't initiative from doing this.

Persona

Based on my insights from previous stages, I’ve created two persona of user who might use the Sustainable app. This persona demonstrates the key user goals, desires and pain points. The main group, they are the sustainable app mainly users, Z generation, and 15 to 24 years old. We hope to Influence this group of people joining to do sustainability, they are 25 to 29 years old. Their details persona info:

This persona are focusing on promoting sustainability and active in sustainable organizations.

The expectation persona is not eliminated by doing sustainability from their lifestyle.

Questionnaire

The "Sustainable app" was a social media platform for the group sustainable, the fundamental function was taking videos and uploading. Furthermore, there was some additional function for them. Our team needs to know which of the function can help them solve the problems and their need with the "Sustainable app".

However, the number of questionnaires we get back totaled 52 valid data. The "map" and "challenging" function were the favorite function from the data.

Competitive Analysis

Certainly, I pursued goals to make an app more competitive strength, I produced market surveys and analyses before designing the function and stylish. Collecting about 66 direct and indirect competitors, and filtering 43 successful app on the market as the reference.

The 43 direct and indirect apps included: 8 Social Media apps, 14 Lifestyle apps, 21 Charity Donation apps.

The infographic shows the topic of "Sustainable App" are mainly distributed in US and Europe county.

Define: Questions&Hypotheses

Define and exploring stage of the project. I have created initial hypothesis that define the problem. To start make up the question by asking HWM (How, Why, Might) and turn them into hypothesis.

Usability Test

After 4 months of development, our team has done an MVP version. To identify any usability problems, collect qualitative and quantitative data, and determine the participant's satisfaction with the MVP. I planned the test, invited participants, and observed during the test. After the test, analyze the findings and convert them into redesign recommendations for the next iteration.

The excel form Identifies how long it takes to complete specified tasks, the green blocks show the participants completed the task easily. The yellow blocks show they have faced an issue problem but still can completed the task. The red block means they can't completed the task and need the observer helped.
After the usability test, the participant provides behavioral and verbal feedback about the interface while she performs those tasks.

UI Design

Before starting the digital design, using the structure of the app, I drew out lo-fi sketches and confirm the architecture with the PM and Engineering team members.

Mockup, Prototype, UI Guidelines and Design System

After confirmed the Wireframe and Spec with team members, I started drawing Mockup with Figma. I always composition the mockup with pages or function. Also leave comments, UI Flow to develop team. For this "Sustainable App" project, I have output about 224 pages of mockups.

I will draw a prototype for some functions to present the interaction and flow to team members. Sometimes also do prototypes for highly finished products to show to the supervisor.

Before handled the mockup to develops, I do UI guidelines that included Styles, UI components likes buttons, tags, tabbar etc.Create a UI system for the commonly used component like tags, buttons, colors, fonts, etc.

Creating component with auto layout can easily change the wording in the component, easier component browsing, reduced complexity of instances, preserved overrides, and compatibility with existing work.

1. Learning by doing, the complete user research process that I handled and participated was a new experience for me. It's more exciting to execute the research than study from the article.

2. In the past, I always thought that the designer only needs to sketch, but in the team with an exclusive designer, I earned lots of soft power skills from research and leadership, such as communication, and influence.

3. Learning from others, every connection, and communication with the people in different roles, I learned from them. Like the topic of "Sustainable", after the interview, I got to know their thought and the meaning of sustainable.
